Unlocking the Power of Accents: A Study on Credibility

Chapter 1: The Impact of Accents on Professional Perception
Accents can significantly affect how individuals are perceived in professional settings. Many young professionals and managers actively work to refine their speech patterns to enhance their career prospects. Recent research indicates that this effort may be beneficial.
Psychologists Shiri Lev-Ari and Boaz Keysar from the University of Chicago conducted a study examining how accents influence credibility. Volunteers listened to neutral sentences like "Ants don't sleep" or "A giraffe survives longer without water than a camel." The speakers delivered these sentences either without any accent, with a mild foreign accent, or with a pronounced accent.
To ensure unbiased results, the researchers informed participants that the speakers would read pre-prepared sentences. Despite this, the speakers' accents impacted how they were perceived. On a credibility scale, speakers without accents scored 7.5, those with mild accents received 6.95, while those with strong accents only garnered 6.84.
In a follow-up experiment, researchers disclosed their intentions and examined whether this transparency altered the results. Surprisingly, statements from speakers with mild accents were now rated equally credible to those without accents. However, speakers with strong accents continued to receive lower scores. Lev-Ari and Keysar concluded, "We believe that people with accents are given less credence simply because they are more difficult to understand."
Although this study was conducted in English, its implications are relevant in Germany as well, where certain accents enjoy more favorable perceptions than others. A survey by the Elitepartner dating platform in January 2009, which included 4,127 German singles, highlighted which dialects were considered particularly attractive. The results were as follows:
- Bavarian (42.2 percent)
- Viennese (28.4)
- Swiss German (27)
- Berliner (22.8)
- Kölsch (17.8)
- Low German (15.4)
- Swabian (14.9)
- Baden (11.9)
- Hessian (10.1)
- Saxon (9.1)
