Excitement and Caution: Apple's March 8th Event Predictions

Chapter 1: Anticipating Apple's March 8th Event
As the date approaches for Apple's event on March 8th, I find myself filled with a blend of excitement and skepticism. It's Apple, after all, and any event they hold typically carries some weight, right? While that’s true to an extent, history shows us that many events have fallen short of expectations—even from the perspective of a devoted fan. The upcoming event feels like it could fall into this category once again.
I admit I’m cautiously optimistic, using this distraction to momentarily forget pressing global issues like the pandemic and geopolitical tensions. Yet, I can't shake the nagging suspicion that, post-Tim's keynote, many of us might leave feeling underwhelmed.
Later note: To find out how the event unfolded and the products introduced, check out the follow-up piece on the iPhone SE3.
Section 1.1: iPhone SE3: A Familiar Disappointment
The iPhone SE has gained traction due to its affordability, but I have always perceived it as lacking. It often seems like a collection of outdated parts, and its poor battery life doesn’t help its case in terms of environmental sustainability. For me to feel excited about the SE3, I would need to see significant improvements in battery life and a more modern design—something beyond just a new A-chip.
However, I doubt Apple will make substantial changes to the SE3. We’ll likely see the same old design with minimal upgrades, perhaps a slightly better chip and some software enhancements, along with the addition of 5G. Given the current state of 5G networks, this feature may be more of a gimmick than a necessity.
Section 1.2: Mac mini: Potential for Excitement
The Mac mini could be intriguing, but this hinges on Apple's broader strategy for the Mac lineup. The current model could easily accommodate a more powerful version with Pro and Max SOCs, along with additional ports. Alternatively, it could simply house the rumored M2 chip, which raises the question—why would anyone need such a large case for a compact computer?
Ideally, Apple would surprise us with a sleeker M2 and an enhanced M1 version. However, Apple has a history of making puzzling decisions, so this event might follow suit.
Chapter 2: The M2 13" MacBook Pro and More
The introduction of the M2 13" MacBook Pro seems likely, but it doesn't particularly excite me. I had the M1 version and found it satisfactory, but after a year, my enthusiasm waned. If the design remains the same and only the internals receive updates, while I might grab it for testing and as a portable backup, my excitement won’t match what I felt for the original M1.
This is understandable; I believe Apple will adopt a more gradual approach to updates, making it challenging to recapture the initial excitement generated by the M1 and its variants. I would, however, appreciate improved battery life and would prefer a new MacBook Air over an upgraded 13" MacBook Pro.
Section 2.1: iPad Air: The "Meh" Factor
I use my iPad Air daily, and at three years old, I don’t feel the need to upgrade. The requirement to replace the pencil when switching to a new model is also frustrating. Although some might find joy in yet another update, I anticipate a lackluster refresh with only minor internal changes.
The upcoming iPad Air seems poised for a routine update, much like the iPhone SE, but with better battery performance.
Section 2.2: Thunderbolt Monitor: A Wish List
The prospect of a new Thunderbolt monitor excites me. Since the older version was discontinued, I’ve missed it. While it was bulky, it remains one of the best screens available and was reasonably priced.
I envision Apple taking their new 24" iMac display, enhancing it to 28", removing the internal components, and launching a standalone Thunderbolt monitor. My concern is that it won’t be as straightforward, nor will it remain below the $1000 mark—an unfortunate reality, as many would love to connect one or two 28" Retina displays to their M1 machines.
Regardless of what unfolds on the 8th, I'll be glued to my screen, taking notes and sharing my thoughts. It will be a subjective yet pragmatic assessment of the new announcements, so if you're interested, subscribe to receive the latest updates directly in your inbox.
