Embracing My Passion: Why I Chose Medium Over Software Engineering

Written on

Chapter 1: My Journey to Content Writing

Allow me to share my story. I am currently in my third year of a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science program—let's refer to me as "the junior student." For the past five years, I have been engaged in content writing for a variety of clients, both locally and internationally.

Starting from scratch, I recall my first client barely compensating me for my efforts, despite my belief that I deserved more. As I transitioned into freelancing, I dedicated countless hours to honing my skills. A memorable moment came when one of my clients offered me a full-time position with a five-figure salary. I was at the pinnacle of my career, joyfully buying gifts for my family and fulfilling my online shopping desires. However, I made a decision that would change everything.

Many people expressed their disbelief when they learned I was pursuing content writing as a computer science student. They insisted that I had greater potential in CS and that I was taking the easy route to earn money, rather than challenging myself with the more demanding path. Influenced by their opinions, I made the regretful choice to abandon content writing.

A student contemplating their career choices

Days turned into months as I focused solely on my university life, writing code around the clock and spending sleepless nights debugging. My existence became monotonous, leading to anxiety and a sense of confinement. My grades began to decline, and my motivation dwindled.

In an attempt to cope, I opened my laptop one evening, accessed Google Docs, and poured out my thoughts. The relief was instant; I felt lighter. I continued this nightly ritual, and after a month, my life began to regain a semblance of normalcy that I had missed for half a year.

I realized that writing was not merely a means to earn a living or to buy items from my wish list; it held deeper significance for me. From that moment, I resolved to ignore the naysayers and pursue my passion. I started writing for myself while also collaborating with clients. Why shouldn't my passion yield financial rewards? There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, right? It has now been a year since I committed to this path.

Currently, I am a junior in my BSCS program and have chosen to channel my passion for writing on Medium. I also signed up for the Medium Partner Program, but my primary aim is to express myself freely. I am excited to connect with remarkable individuals, share their stories, and cultivate a supportive community on Medium.
