Understanding the Profiles of Executive Audiences in Data Science

Chapter 1: Meet the Executives
When crafting messages for executive audiences, it’s essential to understand the individuals behind the titles. Here are profiles of three key figures I often write for.
Samantha, or Sam for Short
Samantha, commonly known as Sam (she/her), is a seasoned executive with extensive experience in both the for-profit and non-profit sectors. Early in her career, she worked for prominent consulting firms. Sam is well-versed in the latest advancements in data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and advanced analytics. However, she approaches data with a critical mindset, recognizing that using data without purpose can lead to organizational pitfalls. Sam is consistently inspired by her team's work and is eager to enhance her organization’s understanding of their efforts. She prioritizes effective communication and collaboration among her teams to optimize the use of data. Additionally, Sam plays a crucial role in evaluating new software and technology acquisitions, exercising caution as vendor claims can often be overstated. She aims to bolster her team's capability to critically assess new technology, which would streamline her decision-making process.
Dave, or Dav for Short
Dave, who prefers to be called Dav (ze/zim), currently oversees three data science teams. Before ascending to senior management, he worked as a data scientist. Dav values his connections with his team, other organizational members, and senior leaders. Initially a math major with aspirations of becoming a teacher, Dav discovered an opportunity to pursue a degree in art just before graduation. After teaching for two years, he sought more lucrative opportunities and was encouraged by classmates to enter data science. His artistic and educational background has allowed him to excel in his current role. Dav is now looking to advance further in his career, exploring potential chief technology officer and chief data officer roles. He believes that this guide will assist him in enhancing his contributions to his organization and prepare him for future senior positions.
Poleh, or Pol for Short
Poleh, known as Pol (she/her), is newly appointed as a chief data officer at an electronic medical records software firm. Her career began in real estate, where she balanced a salaried position in property management with sales as a real estate agent. After five years, she transitioned into IT management, focusing on the support and maintenance of electronic medical records systems. Following her graduate studies, Pol continued in the EMRS field but shifted her focus to marketing. She realized that the advanced analytical skills required for marketing would be beneficial in data science. Now in her first 90 days as chief data officer, Pol is strategizing for long-term success in her role and aims to integrate the activities outlined in this guide into her strategic planning for the coming years.
