Lessons Learned Late: Embracing Growth and Change in Life

Written on

Chapter 1: The Importance of Relationships

Growing up as a military child, frequent relocations felt burdensome until around the fourth grade when my father explained that this lifestyle would introduce me to diverse cultures and invaluable life lessons. Here are some insights I wish to share.

Important connections can fade — It’s a reality that significant individuals in our lives may become distant for various reasons, whether due to drifting apart or evolving in separate directions. However, it’s equally possible for new acquaintances to become vital figures in our lives almost instantly. A friend of mine believes in the motto #NoNewFriends, but that mindset can limit the chance to form meaningful connections with incredible people.

Your diet extends beyond food — With age comes the realization that my diet encompasses more than just what I consume physically; it includes the media I engage with, the literature I read, and the company I keep. To nurture a healthier mindset, I must eliminate the "junk" from my life, often found in social media, and recalibrate my online interactions to support personal growth.

Sometimes prioritizing your happiness means disappointing others — My mental health is paramount, surpassing career ambitions, financial gain, and external expectations. To ensure my well-being, I may need to prioritize myself, even if it means letting someone down. True self-love is essential and must take precedence over the desire for external validation, as genuine fulfillment stems from within.

Rejection shouldn't lead to self-doubt — After facing numerous rejections in both relationships and ventures, I’ve learned to embrace these experiences rather than succumb to fear. Avoiding situations due to fear of rejection only leads to self-imposed limitations, which ultimately results in further rejection from oneself.

Accepting responsibility for my journey — While we may not control the trauma we’ve faced, we do have the power to break negative cycles. Allowing past experiences to dictate present behavior can hinder our growth. Our objective should be to foster a better environment and strive for improvement in our lives.

Quality over quantity in relationships — The essence of life lies in the depth of connections rather than the number of acquaintances. A single genuine friendship outweighs the value of numerous superficial relationships. Similarly, one meaningful experience can be far more enriching than countless fleeting moments.

Revising the narrative of life's expectations — Holding onto societal norms can lead to dissatisfaction. The pressure to follow a predetermined path—like attending college, securing a job, or starting a family—can stifle our happiness. Life is inherently unpredictable, and it's crucial to remember that there is no universal blueprint for how we should navigate our own journeys.
