Chapter 1: Discovering Leadership Through Cats
As a lifelong cat enthusiast, I only welcomed a feline companion into my home a couple of years ago, and later adopted another to keep my first cat company. For the past seven years, I've shared my space with these remarkable creatures, observing their distinct personalities and tuning into their needs. Through this journey, I've not only become a better individual but have also gleaned invaluable lessons that can be applied to organizational life.
Lesson 1: Embrace Feedback as a Growth Opportunity
Meet Chocolat, my British Shorthair cat. Affectionately known as a "mommy's boy," he considers himself the ruler of our home. Known for their gentle nature, British Shorthairs like Chocolat can sometimes exhibit mischievous behavior. While I understand he’s not a mere ornament, my reactions to his antics can sometimes be perceived as critical feedback. Yet, no matter how firm I may seem, he retains his regal demeanor, which I find endearing.
Lesson 2: Recognize the Unspoken Needs of Your Team
Cats, like team members, often struggle to articulate their desires. I've learned to observe Chocolat's body language and vocalizations to determine when he needs food, playtime, or affection. For example, when he’s hungry, he patiently waits by his bowls until I take notice. By being attuned to these subtle cues, I can better support my team by recognizing when they require encouragement or acknowledgment.
Lesson 3: Look After Your Team Members
My second cat, Sabina, was a street rescue who initially displayed a dominant attitude towards Chocolat. One day, noticing her anxious behavior, I followed her to find Chocolat frightened outside. This incident taught me that, as a leader, it’s crucial to protect all members of your team, ensuring they feel secure and valued.
Lesson 4: Collaborate for Greater Objectives
Even cats need to join forces occasionally, as Chocolat and Sabina have shown, albeit reluctantly. Their combined efforts often lead to mischief, reminding me that teamwork is essential for achieving shared goals, even if relationships aren’t always perfect.
Lesson 5: Don’t Hesitate to Let Go
Tragically, we lost Sabina to cancer last September. After mourning her loss, I chose to adopt another stray cat, Carly, a delightful Ragdoll mix. This decision reinforced the idea that when someone departs from our lives or organizations, it opens the door for new opportunities and connections.
Lesson 6: Welcome New Members While Valuing Existing Ones
After a month alone, Chocolat had to adjust to Carly joining our household. Initially, he showed signs of jealousy, but with time, I made sure to engage both cats equally, which fostered a more harmonious environment. A leader's role is to ensure that everyone feels secure and appreciated, especially during times of change.
Lesson 7: Commit to Continuous Learning
Leadership development is ongoing. Technical skills and formal education can only take you so far; effective leaders must also cultivate soft skills like listening and communication. Embracing change and growth is essential in any leadership role.
Lesson 8: Stand By Your Team
Cats possess an innate ability to sense when I’m feeling down, often curling up next to me for comfort. This behavior highlights the importance of compassion and support within a team. Great leaders are attuned to their team's emotional states and provide the necessary support.
Lesson 9: Engage with Your Stakeholders
Chocolat is typically territorial, but when I'm away, my partner steps in to care for him. This relationship demonstrates the importance of collaborating with stakeholders, as they play a critical role in supporting your organization.
Lesson 10: Foster Team Unity
In both good and challenging times, we share our lives and work together. By learning from and supporting one another, we build a stronger team, which is the backbone of any successful organization.
