The Importance of Relaxation Over Sleep: Discovering Inner Peace

Chapter 1: Understanding the Value of Relaxation
"Just relax, for only in relaxation will you uncover what lies within you." — Osho
Incredibly, some yogis have reportedly never slept. Are they devoid of the need for sleep or are they extraordinary beings? The answer is neither. They have grasped that sleep is merely a profound state of relaxation. Their minds and bodies maintain a state of deep calm even when they are awake.
However, in today's world, many of us wake up feeling fatigued. The era of hard physical labor has faded, and now, it's the constant flood of thoughts that exhausts us. Anxiety, stress, relentless planning, and unmet expectations drain our vitality. We often try to remedy this with processed foods, substances, or sleep, yet these solutions fall short.
The Invisible Mind: Key to Your Happiness
Heaven and hell exist within our experiences. When we feel overwhelmed and drained, life feels like hell; conversely, when we are calm and content, it feels heavenly. The secret lies in our minds. The endless chatter and activity within our heads can lead to suffering, fueled by societal pressures and workplace demands.
Yet, there is always an alternative — relaxation!
From childhood, we are conditioned to worry about tasks, exams, and job security. However, we can reprogram ourselves to break free from this exhausting cycle.
Section 1.1: A Simple Experiment
To illustrate how deeply society has ingrained this pattern of constant activity, let’s conduct a brief experiment.
Sit comfortably. Focus on your breath. Inhale and exhale deeply five times. Now, try to remain still — physically and mentally — for the next two minutes. No movement (aside from blinking and breathing) and no thoughts.
Can you remain still for just two minutes? Most likely, the answer is no. The urge to fidget and the flood of thoughts may overwhelm you. Our society has trained us to avoid complete relaxation.
Subsection 1.1.1: The Path to Relaxation
Research indicates that relaxation boosts productivity and creativity, and serves as a vital remedy for sleep disorders. But relaxation goes beyond sleep; it can be accessed at any moment. Transitioning from a compulsive work mindset to a state of tranquility requires time and effort.
Results may not be immediate, which can be discouraging. However, once you grasp the power of slowing down, you will never wish to revert to your previous ways.
Consciously Slow Down
When I embraced silence, my pace in walking, eating, and typing naturally decelerated. The joy of experiencing movement and connection with my surroundings became profound. I realized that life is not merely about reaching destinations but savoring the journey.
Start a Mindfulness Practice
For many years, I enjoyed leisurely walks to work. The mindful act of placing my foot on the ground and feeling the grass beneath me deeply connected me to nature. Starting a mindfulness practice can be challenging; however, committing to one activity daily can signal your brain to slow down.
Let Go of the Need for Validation
While humans are inherently social, we often seek validation through our appearances, status, and possessions. This desire creates internal conflict. By focusing on self-acceptance and understanding, you can diminish the need to impress others, paving the way for relaxation.
Takeaways
As humans, we are part of nature, which thrives in slowness and productivity. Rushing through our routines depletes our energy. Instead of striving for more, we often find ourselves stressed and fatigued. Embrace your true self, relinquish insecurities, and recognize that you are already whole.
By letting go of resistance, you can relax and fully appreciate life.
"Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don’t resist them — that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality." — Lao Tzu
