With the sun shining brightly nearly every day in Champaign-Urbana, summer is in full swing. The pleasant outdoor air inspired me to embrace the season by stepping outside. This has led to my recent commitment to walking between 2 to 5 miles daily. Here are three significant benefits I've experienced from this habit.

I am more aware of my surroundings. Each morning, as I stroll around the University of Illinois campus, I encounter new sights I might have missed before. For instance, I've noticed blooming petunias in a sorority garden, a blue jay perched on a branch, and even a vintage car that has stood the test of time. Observing these details leaves me in awe. The world is teeming with wonders, and taking a break from screens allows me to appreciate them fully. I don't follow a fixed path; instead, I choose a different direction each day, which leads me to discover new things or view familiar ones from a fresh angle.

Walking also helps me clear my mind. Negative thoughts seem to fade away during my walks, allowing me to focus on the positive aspects of my life. I prefer not to listen to music, as it can be distracting. Instead, I engage in self-talk, reflecting on my goals for the day and week, as well as accomplishments from the past. This method proves to be as effective as jotting everything down, helping me organize my thoughts and gain clarity.

While I may not achieve the fitness level of a personal trainer, walking contributes significantly to my health and happiness.
