Empower Yourself: Take Control of Your Life and Career

Chapter 1: Regaining Control
Navigating the workplace can often feel like a power struggle. "The reality is simple: those who hold the financial reins set the rules."
Reflecting on my experiences, I find it frustrating when anyone tries to dictate how I should spend my time. I particularly dislike being treated like a child simply to earn a paycheck.
A memorable incident occurred when a woman attempted to manipulate her way into getting a table at my restaurant. While my manager tried to accommodate her excuses for not having a reservation at our busy establishment in DC, I stood by, visibly irritated. It bothers me deeply when someone tries to pull a fast one on me, especially when they make me feel foolish for their errors. Thankfully, I had the favor of my boss, so my disdain for her entitlement was evident. I wasn't about to play nice just to keep my position.
During my time in various jobs, I've faced condescension, unwanted advances, and outright disrespect from both colleagues and clients. In retrospect, I tolerated a lot just to cover expenses for a place I didn't care to live in. My dream was to be lounging on a beach somewhere, working on my laptop, rather than returning to a cramped apartment after a job I loathed.
While vacationing in Thailand a few years back, I received a call from my boss regarding a client. After our discussion, he inquired about my trip.
"Oh, it's stunning here! I wake up to a breathtaking beach view every day," I replied.
"Glad to hear that!" he said.
Feeling bold, I posed a question, "You know, you really don’t need me in the office, right? I can handle my responsibilities remotely. Maybe I should just relocate and work from here."
He chuckled. "Uh, no. You’re coming back on Monday, right?"
"Yes," I replied, my disappointment palpable.
Hearing "no" is something I truly detest. Yes, I understand I'm an adult and it would be unrealistic to expect everything to go my way. However, if I can assert control over my life and prioritize my own needs, that should be fulfilling. I refuse to let anyone dictate how I spend my 24 hours, especially if it means being spoken to like a subordinate for a paycheck.
When you take charge of your life, you gain the autonomy to shape your environment and reality. You are not obligated to endure someone else’s bad day or personal struggles. You have countless options regarding where you want to reside and how you wish to spend your time.
While I believe that no one should face disrespect in the workplace, regardless of their salary, the world often does not cater to our feelings.
Ultimately, remember this: "Those who hold the money dictate the terms." Start envisioning your potential. Grant yourself the freedom to break free from your current circumstances. Pursue your passions and begin compensating yourself today.
