Chapter 1: A Passion for Automation

Life has been incredibly rewarding. I am fortunate to work in an area that fuels my enthusiasm—bringing custom automated systems to life and witnessing the positive impact these projects have on people's lives. I've had the privilege of installing systems in various factories worldwide, with my standout projects being at the San Francisco Mint.

Each production line there features 13 FANUC robots, 6 FANUC vision cameras, 12 Cognex vision inspection cameras, 11 conveyors, 9 servo motors, 13 Power Flex AC motor drives, and numerous air cylinders—all working together to package commemorative coins for the U.S. Treasury. This project was not only lengthy and challenging but also required me to reside in San Francisco for a considerable period. The skills I acquired throughout my training truly came into play, whether it was in programming, project management, or even public speaking during training sessions, SNAFU meetings, and various troubleshooting scenarios.

After that transformative experience, I have worked on numerous other systems that share similar characteristics. However, the comprehensive set of experiences from that particular project was unparalleled. Currently, I am two-thirds of the way through a substantial project that packages 10-pound chocolate bars into 2000-pound boxes on wooden skids. This setup utilizes two robots, two Cognex cameras, a Siemens PLC and HMI, conveyors, a weigh scale, buffer zones, and a metal detector. Thankfully, this client is close to home, allowing me to return each day.

As I look to the future, I am eager to engage in projects that enable me to work more from my home office. I want to travel on my terms and to places of my choosing. To this end, I plan to reach out to programming-centric companies to explore opportunities that align with my skill set in development programming. Another promising direction would be providing offline setup programming for PLCs, robots, HMIs, and vision systems. This approach would leverage my 25 years of experience effectively and help businesses transition to more adaptable systems.

With AI increasingly influencing the industry, staying updated with software advancements is crucial. I am genuinely excited about the future trajectory of the programming field! When you discover a passion as profound as mine, it's essential to nurture it and continue pushing boundaries.
