Embrace the Journey: Finding Strength in Sobriety

Chapter 1: The Early Days of Sobriety

Sobriety stands as one of my most significant accomplishments, and it can be yours as well.

A serene moment reflecting on sobriety.

I felt much like the character from "When Harry Met Sally" who envied what another had—only my desire wasn’t for romance, but for a life free of alcohol. I had been immersing myself in stories of individuals who had overcome addiction and embraced sobriety. Their joy and enthusiasm for their new lives inspired me deeply, and I wanted that same feeling.

Now that I have achieved it, I feel immense pride and joy, prompting me to reflect on those tumultuous initial months of my sobriety. It was a whirlwind of emotions, from cravings to uncertainty, and fears of potential failure. After two years of false starts, I finally embraced sobriety four and a half years ago.

The path hasn't always been smooth; it's been filled with obstacles and challenges. Yet, I managed to navigate through them, albeit not always with finesse.

Section 1.1: The DIY Approach

Initially, my journey toward becoming alcohol-free was somewhat solitary, despite it being a personal endeavor. I consumed a plethora of self-help literature about quitting drinking, and after a month of sobriety, I began attending SMART Recovery meetings occasionally.

In those early weeks, only my husband was aware of my decision. He chose not to join me in sobriety, and I was prepared to face this journey alone, even as he enjoyed his cocktails right in front of me. My closest friend was away, and while we exchanged texts, I hesitated to share my struggle with her. Shannon had a casual relationship with alcohol—she could indulge or abstain, something I found impossible.

There were moments when the cocktail hour approached, and I would pour myself a sparkling seltzer mixed with cranberry juice in a beautiful crystal glass. I felt a surge of happiness knowing I could enjoy a refreshing drink without alcohol. Each day I refrained from drinking was a small victory worth celebrating, even if it wasn't publicly acknowledged.

My husband supported me, even though it was evident he missed having a drinking partner.

Subsection 1.1.1: Navigating Cravings

However, there were days when I questioned the joy of my cranberry and seltzer concoction. I craved a Manhattan and wanted it desperately. I learned to withstand those urges, which sometimes felt more like wistful longing rather than a true craving. It was akin to missing an ex-partner after a breakup—knowing it was right to move on, yet still feeling a pang of nostalgia.

On those tough days, I would take my Golden Retriever for a walk, determined to resist the temptation. By the time I returned home, the urge had usually subsided—another day marked sober on my calendar, which felt incredibly rewarding.

I grieved for my favorite cocktails—the delightful Manhattans, exquisite Cosmopolitans, and my beloved buttery Chardonnay. I missed the initial euphoric effects of alcohol, but I recognized that I must never allow those substances to cross my lips again.

There were many nights I found myself on my knees praying for strength. When battling addiction, it’s essential to employ every tool at your disposal to maintain your resolve. My seltzer, a flavored LaCroix, along with my current novel, became my comforting rituals.

Section 1.2: Managing Emotions

One day, after a disagreement with my husband, I felt an overwhelming urge to drink. Frustrated, I retreated to the bedroom, venting my frustrations silently and crying. Ultimately, I emerged knowing that alcohol would not resolve our conflict.

I persevered through that moment and many others, resisting the strong temptation for a drink. The journey to sobriety is no easy feat; however, the rewards have proven invaluable.

Sobriety has transformed my life in ways I had never anticipated. My existence is now calmer and more creative. My memory is sharper, and I experience emotions more profoundly. I have come to accept my quieter, more introspective nature, which I had previously resisted.

I now find joy in simple pleasures—intimate conversations or cozy dinners at my favorite restaurant. Perhaps, like me, you've discovered your true self during sobriety, one that differs from the person you were when drinking.

If you're contemplating quitting alcohol, you might be surprised to realize that the authentic version of yourself is distinct from the person you were under the influence. I cherish my sober self, and while I always believed in my self-worth, I now hold a deeper respect for who I am.

You, too, will grow to love the new you.
