Embrace Authenticity: Ditch Your Alter Ego for Good

Chapter 1: The Cost of Pretense
How often do you find yourself acting like someone else? How frequently do you reveal just a fragment of your true self? This raises a crucial question: when does your "representative" take the stage instead of the authentic you? This representative is merely a shadow of who you are— a more agreeable, politically correct version that often seeks to please others at the expense of your individuality.
This watered-down persona lacks the edge, unique perspective, and distinctiveness that make you, you. It’s overly preoccupied with others' opinions, oblivious to the fact that most people are consumed by their own thoughts and concerns.
How often does this (inauthentic) YOU appear as the (genuine) YOU?
A few years ago, I had the opportunity to train with bestselling author and body language expert Janine Driver, who posed a strikingly simple yet profound question that resonated deeply with me. To clarify, let’s break down some definitions:
- "Representative" — (noun) a person or thing that stands in for another.
- "Represent" — (verb) to act in place of, portray, or depict.
A representative is essentially a stand-in, a pretender.
For the majority of my life, my own "representative" has been quite prominent. While this alter ego has good intentions and has occasionally been helpful, it has often held me back. I’ve come to realize that what appears to be an asset is, in fact, a liability.
Even as I write this, I must be cautious not to let my "rep" dominate the conversation.
I know you can relate to this. The true voice behind these words is Tom, who embodies qualities like edginess, sarcasm, humor, and intelligence. On the other hand, "Rep Tom" would shy away from expressing those sentiments, fearing judgment. However, the authentic Tom is unafraid to speak his mind.
I’ve learned that embracing who you are—being genuine, honest, and authentic—is crucial. There is no alternative if you aim to lead a fulfilling life. Authenticity fosters deeper connections with others and allows you to make a meaningful impact on this planet.
Retire your representative.
Give yourself the green light to put that façade aside. I’m addressing both you and myself in this moment.
Do yourself—and the world—a favor by simply being YOU. There’s no room left for inauthenticity or fear-driven existence. Anything less than the true you is a disservice to the world and what you have to contribute.
As my mother used to say, that would be a "crying shame."
So, be YOU, because there is no one better suited for the role.
