Curiosity: The Key Trait Worth Trading Everything For
Written on
Chapter 1: The Power of Curiosity
Curiosity is a trait that truly deserves our attention. It is not mere intelligence that captivates me. Have you ever noticed how children ask the same question repeatedly? Even after receiving an answer, they persist with "What…what…what?" until they fully grasp the meaning. A perfect example unfolded last night with my uncle and his three-year-old son.
Kid: Papa, what is that? (pointing to an alarm clock)
Uncle: That’s an alarm clock.
Kid: aaah? (struggling to understand the term ‘alarm clock’)
Uncle: It’s an alarm clock (smiling patiently).
Kid: aaah?
Uncle: It’s a clock.
Kid: Clo..ck (understanding but unable to articulate the word).
Uncle: Yes, it’s a clock.
Kid: aaah?
After three attempts, my uncle lost his patience and suggested his son go play. Wasn’t that a moment when curiosity was extinguished?
This scenario is quite common in many households. Families often lack the patience necessary to cultivate curiosity, particularly in children. From simple objects like clocks to complex items such as atlases, children are naturally inclined to ask why things exist and how they function. Schools, which should encourage such curiosity, often fall short. Teachers may ridicule a child’s questions and eagerness to understand the world, while peers might mock their inquisitiveness, stifling their passion for exploration.
From the early days of humankind discovering fire to Newton's inquiries about the falling apple, every major advancement stemmed from a desire to understand. Questions like "What happens when I strike two stones together?" and "Why does the apple fall instead of rising?" likely fueled their curiosity.
I firmly believe that the one quality I would trade anything for is curiosity. When I am curious about a subject, I don't require any external motivation, perseverance, or discipline to pursue it. I’ll dedicate as much time as necessary to learn and innovate based on what I discover.
An excellent illustration of this is my reading habit. I picked up a book titled ‘Half Girlfriend’ by Chetan Bhagat, and it captured my interest from the very first page. Now, four years later, I carry a book with me everywhere I go. My reading spans from teenage tales to philosophical works, driven solely by my curiosity to unravel the story of a boy who is both awkward and uncharismatic in his quest for love, as well as my desire to understand human psychology.
To truly nurture curiosity, one must exercise patience, as it can lead to extraordinary outcomes.
In conclusion, I encourage you to keep questioning everything. This is the first step toward personal evolution, as enthusiasm drives our minds to explore endless possibilities.
