Chapter 1: The Allure of Travel
Greetings, fellow explorers! I am Destiny S. Harris, a passionate traveler who embraces spontaneity whenever the mood strikes. My love for travel was sparked early on during family road trips across the United States.
Traveling is where I feel most at home, offering a sense of belonging in every new environment. I thrive on the excitement of change and the unknown, relishing the opportunity to meet diverse people, dance, and engage in conversations that deepen my understanding of their cultures.
This leads me to my primary travel pursuit: simply existing in the moment. While engaging activities can be delightful, my true joy comes from being present. There are times when I do nothing at all, and in those moments, I find complete peace.
I hail from the stunning, mountainous West Coast, a place I’ve been fortunate to call home for over half my life. Returning from my travels is never daunting; home serves as my sanctuary of happiness.
In my professional life, I work in technology. Although my academic background doesn’t align directly with my career, I began my journey in tech during college and have remained in this field ever since. I appreciate the challenges and experiences that come with it, finding a sense of tranquility in my work.
My travels have taken me to many places, and while I have yet to explore some of my dream destinations, the Middle East stands out as my favorite so far. Initially intimidated by the region, it quickly became a beloved place for me.
During my downtime, I enjoy reading, spending time with my family and dogs, exercising, discovering new activities, writing, and having fun.
My top travel advice is to pack lightly and be prepared to part with things. Loss and the unexpected are part of the adventure, but mastering the skill of detachment is invaluable for any journey.
If given the chance to reside elsewhere, I would choose the Middle East. I’ve found a profound sense of peace there, although Europe’s lush landscapes would be my second choice. However, as I continue to explore, my preferences may evolve.
I prefer to travel with minimal baggage, often relying on others' checked bags for items I want but can afford to lose.
Chapter 2: Lessons Learned from the Journey
Three key lessons I’ve gleaned from my travels are as follows:
- The Importance of Detachment: I’ve experienced loss and damage to my belongings. At times, I’ve had items taken at airports, but I’ve learned to accept these moments as part of the journey. Our minds hold the greatest treasures—those can never be taken from us.
- Flexibility is Key: Unexpected challenges can arise. For instance, I faced a bout of food poisoning just before a camel riding adventure in the Middle East. Though I typically avoid medication, a friend urged me to take it, and it transformed my experience into one of the highlights of my travels. Reflecting on a missed opportunity to visit Antarctica, I have no regrets. Choosing China instead was valuable for my studies, but Antarctica remains an enticing prospect.
- Spontaneity in Itineraries: You don’t need to meticulously plan your travels. Some of my most memorable journeys were spontaneous, with decisions made on the fly. These adventures often included visits to ten or more countries, teaching me to embrace flexibility in all aspects of life.
