Six Remarkable Yet Simple Traits of Wise Individuals

Written on

Chapter 1: The Quest for Wisdom

Wisdom has always been a goal of mine. Years ago, I came across the prayer of young King Solomon, where he humbly sought wisdom from God:

7 "And now, O Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of David my father, although I am but a little child. I do not know how to go out or come in. 8 And your servant is in the midst of your people whom you have chosen, a great people, too many to be numbered or counted for multitude. 9 Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this your great people?” (1 Kings 3:7–9 ESV)

From that moment on, I began reciting his prayer nightly. Reflecting on that time, I believe the Lord has indeed answered my plea. The Holy Spirit has unveiled profound truths about God that have aided me during life's turbulent moments. Furthermore, I've encountered remarkable role models who embody six specific traits that I aspire to emulate.

Section 1.1: They Evolve Through Reflection

The saying goes, "A word to the wise is sufficient." Wise individuals frequently contemplate their experiences. When they identify an area needing improvement, they act promptly to address it. They fear stagnation and are committed to growth across all facets of life.

Section 1.2: They Simplify Complex Ideas

Albert Einstein articulated five tiers of intellect: smart, intelligent, brilliant, genius, and, surprisingly, simple. Simple concepts are superior to genius because they are comprehensible. Wise individuals not only possess knowledge but also understand it deeply enough to explain it to a child. This simplicity is often why they are remembered as great educators.

Consider the wisdom found in the Proverbs, Ben Franklin’s Poor Richard’s Almanac, and Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations. However, none surpassed the wisdom of Jesus Christ, who made profound truths accessible to all, regardless of their status. He spoke in the vernacular of everyday people, embodying the essence of a true teacher.

Section 1.3: They Align Intentions with Actions

Most people have admirable intentions—such as being a good parent or employee. Yet, few have genuinely reflected on what it means to fulfill those roles. Wise individuals consistently align their actions with their long-term goals, carefully choosing commitments that reflect their true intentions.

Amidst a hectic day, they ask themselves, "What is my purpose here?" When discrepancies arise, they take steps to realign their actions with their goals.

Section 1.4: They Look Beyond Appearances

Wise individuals assess options based on their true value, rather than superficial attributes. When making decisions—whether it’s an investment, a partner, or an educational program—they focus on deeper qualities rather than fleeting trends or first impressions. Their decisions are rooted in a fundamental understanding, which shields them from peer pressure and media distractions.

Section 1.5: They Pursue Understanding

Self-aware and cognizant of their limitations, wise people recognize their biases and blind spots. They tend to listen more than they speak, suspending judgment until they have gathered sufficient information. Ray Dalio advises in his book, Principles, to engage with experts who may challenge our views, thereby enriching our understanding and reducing arrogance.

Section 1.6: They Hold Firm to Core Values

Throughout their lives, wise individuals have cultivated principles and practices that they steadfastly adhere to. Like a child clinging to a beloved toy, they grasp these values tightly. For instance, Charlie Munger and Warren Buffett prioritize honesty in presenting Berkshire Hathaway’s earnings, focusing on clarity over corporate jargon. Their commitment to transparency has earned them deep respect over time.

In summary, wise individuals possess six distinct characteristics:

  1. They evolve through reflection.
  2. They communicate in simple terms.
  3. They align actions with intentions.
  4. They look beneath the surface.
  5. They seek understanding.
  6. They hold firm to core values.

Gaining these traits takes time and awareness, but we can strive to embody them daily, even if we never achieve complete wisdom.
