Revamping My Content Approach: New Strategies for Online Income
Written on
Chapter 1: The Old Strategy
For the past three years, I adhered to a consistent content strategy. Each month, I dedicated around 40 hours to publishing between 17 and 20 articles. These pieces were then repurposed into Twitter threads and YouTube videos. However, the long-form content consumed a significant portion of my time, averaging nearly two hours a day within my four-hour workday. Unfortunately, this approach yielded less than 25% of my monthly income.
You might wonder why it took so long to pivot. The truth is, I genuinely enjoyed writing long-form content. Yet, as a solopreneur managing a business, I realized I needed to find a balance between enjoyment and profitability.
Quick Overview of the Previous Strategy
One long-form article led to:
- Tweets
- Threads
- Newsletter
- YouTube videos
The drawback was that I became so engrossed in crafting a single long-form article that it drained my energy for other tasks, leading to subpar Twitter threads and LinkedIn posts.
New Content Strategy
First and foremost, I identified my primary sources of revenue in the following order:
- Newsletter
- Long-form content
With this in mind, I should prioritize growth on Twitter and LinkedIn, recycling that content into my newsletter, Side Hustle Saturdays. I transitioned to creating high-quality Twitter threads and fresh newsletters, which also allowed me to:
- Combine similar LinkedIn posts into articles
- Use threads as LinkedIn carousels
- Repurpose threads for newsletters
What's the Shift?
This new approach has been more beneficial for my business as it directly engages my target audience, prompting them to take immediate action. Additionally, I can now direct my energy towards ideas and execute them quickly without the pressure of crafting lengthy narratives.
In essence, this shift has liberated me and sparked my creativity.
The Outcomes of This Change
Adapting to this new strategy was not without its challenges. I had to let go of a steady income that had bolstered my confidence and allowed me to leave my job. It was a routine I looked forward to every morning for over two years—a significant period indeed.
Initially, breaking this habit felt uncomfortable. Yet, soon after, my productivity soared. I had more cognitive space to make decisions and unleash my creativity in social media posts. I could devote my full attention to my course, Summit 21, instead of juggling multiple tasks. Additionally, I quickly outlined and acted on a business idea, and as I write this, I'm piloting a course on solopreneurship.
How I Plan to Monetize This Strategy
When I reflect on successful entrepreneurs I admire—like Matt Gray, Justin Welsh, and Ankur Warikoo—they all share a common trait: high-quality content across Twitter, LinkedIn, and their newsletters. This approach not only builds their brand but also enhances visibility and attracts customers.
Consequently, I will concentrate on producing quality content rather than solely crafting stories for the joy of writing.
Balancing Passion and Profit
I cannot envision a future without writing long-form content. I have a passion for sharing travel stories and documenting my journey in public. I cherish the opportunity to articulate my experiences and emotions deeply. While I will continue to write long-form pieces, it will be at a more sustainable pace—not twenty times a month.
Facing My Fears
My income from long-form content has already decreased by 66%. However, I began from scratch and can rebuild. Naturally, I feel apprehensive about whether this new strategy will be effective. Just because it works for established figures doesn't guarantee success for me; different approaches suit different individuals.
Yet, it's a risk worth taking. What if this change brings me closer to my aspirations? I have a strong sense it will, but I'll only discover that by committing to this approach for a sufficient duration.
