Reflecting on History: Lessons from the Past and Present

Written on

Chapter 1: The Importance of Historical Awareness

During a recent trip, I visited a historical site — an old Shell gas station dating back to 1930. It was an enjoyable detour, showcasing how businesses presented themselves in those earlier times.

Reflecting on the past can offer valuable insights. There’s a unique charm in how companies expressed their identity, a quality that feels less prevalent in today’s marketplace. I can imagine that, back in the day, an attendant would pump gas for customers, much like the practice still observed in Oregon and New Jersey.

This visit evoked memories of simpler days — simpler for me, at least.

Fast forward to today, I found myself at a contemporary gas station. These establishments often lack character, resembling each other so closely that they seem indistinguishable.

I had a rewards number for discounts on future transactions. The pump boasted multiple payment options via my phone.

Three QR codes were presented: one standalone, one for Apple, and another for Google. Assuming they were functional, I attempted to scan the Google QR code, but it didn’t work. I even tapped my phone on the code, hoping the NFC feature would engage after I opened Google Pay. No luck.

After a few moments, the pump decided I was taking too long and shut down. I had to start the entire process anew.

I won't mention the thoughts that crossed my mind. I reverted to traditional methods: entered my rewards number, swiped my credit card, and pumped my gas.

It shouldn’t be this complicated. I’ve watched my son navigate it effortlessly. I even have an app that claims to allow touchless payments. I opened the app, but it provided no guidance on how to proceed. Instead, it kept asking for my location or directions, despite having my location services activated and being right next to the pump.

Does this frustration resonate with you? Have you noticed how modern features are often designed by those who don’t fully understand how to communicate their usage to the general public?

How does our history inform us? It serves as a reminder of a time when personal interactions were the norm, when creativity was tangible and visible rather than obscured by apps and programming. It urges us to reconnect with others face-to-face.

I empathize with my parents' struggles to adapt to new technology, as it emerged too late in their lives. I sense a similar trend occurring in my life. If I don’t invest time in learning new tools or feel hesitant to ask for help, I risk being left behind.

Perhaps I should consider relocating to Oregon and let someone else take care of the technicalities.
