Navigating ADHD: My Journey of Understanding and Growth

Chapter 1: My Recent ADHD Diagnosis
I recently received an ADHD diagnosis in my mid-forties, and it has been a whirlwind of emotions as I process this revelation. Throughout my life, I’ve learned to navigate struggles, but now I see that understanding my condition could have made my journey much easier. Although I haven't started medication yet, I'm exploring my options.
To truly comprehend my current situation, I need to revisit my childhood. I can't guarantee that this reflection will be easy or pleasant.
As far back as I can remember, I struggled in school. My teachers perceived me as unmotivated, while I internalized feelings of inadequacy. A vivid memory from third grade stands out: while my classmate effortlessly completed her assignments, I couldn't even finish the first line. Her blunt question, “Are you stupid?” cut deeply and left a lasting impression.
In fourth grade, I shared a class with a boy who was a chess prodigy, winning competitions across Europe at a young age. While academics came easily to him, making friends was another story. One day, I curiously asked him how he was so intelligent. His simple response was, “It’s in my genes.” Confused, I looked at his jeans and asked, “What kind of jeans are you wearing?” It was clear to him that I was struggling.
Chapter 2: Adapting and Learning
As I grew older, I developed my own strategies to cope with schoolwork. Now, as an adult, I recognize that I have a learning disorder that likely includes ADHD. Despite these challenges, I have been fortunate to acquire various skills in IT, photography, and other fields that thrive on unconventional thinking.
Additionally, I am a recovering alcoholic with two years of sobriety under my belt. While it may seem like a tangent, I believe my ADHD contributed to my struggles with alcohol, which served as a coping mechanism.
In my journey towards sobriety and mental health, I participate in many healing sessions that often feel like going back to school. I’m learning how to approach life differently. I also benefit from the shared experiences and wisdom of others facing similar challenges. But how can I effectively absorb all this valuable information when taking notes feels so daunting?
I often find it difficult to read my own handwriting and maintain focus. Even a small distraction can easily throw me off track. To combat this, I’ve discovered that drawing or doodling while taking notes helps immensely. This creative outlet has proven to be a significant breakthrough for me, something that wouldn’t have been accepted in my school days.
Chapter 3: The Art of Note-Taking
I’ve found that jotting down just a few key words and surrounding them with doodles transforms my notes into something memorable—almost like creating art. This visual approach resonates with me on a deeper level.
I want to share some of my recent notes to illustrate my process. In my recovery sessions, I often engage with scripture, which brings me comfort. I’m learning to be kinder to myself as I take my time to absorb the valuable insights shared during these sessions. There’s no rush to capture every word; I can revisit my notes later.
I’m curious to know what strategies work for you. Do you have a unique method for note-taking? I would love to hear your experiences! My approach might not be conventional, but it resonates with my inner child.
