Recent incidents involving AI users have highlighted alarming experiences of harassment, such as receiving derogatory comments or inappropriate messages. Such encounters are understandably distressing for individuals and could significantly influence their future interactions with AI. It raises an important question: would you continue to engage with an AI that had previously subjected you or your loved ones to harassment? Moreover, how would you feel recommending such a system to others? For AI, however, these events lack emotional weight; it doesn't possess feelings and is indifferent to whether a user chooses to return. This behavior stems purely from its programming.
This leads us to ponder whether a change is needed. Various scholars have sought to tackle this issue, and I feel compelled to share my own insights. Should we train AI to experience regret for its erroneous actions?
Section 1.1: Philosophical Perspectives on Regret
Regret has been a long-standing topic of inquiry for philosophers, psychologists, and other thinkers, embodying both positive and negative connotations. In this discussion, we will explore the importance of regret in human relationships and how it might enhance interactions between humans and AI.
Regret is essentially a feeling of disappointment or sorrow over past actions. It can exert either a constructive or destructive influence, prompting introspection and personal growth, or conversely, leading to feelings of guilt and despair.

Aristotle regarded regret as a positive emotion that could be harnessed for self-improvement. He believed it offers a chance to learn from our missteps and become better individuals. This notion could similarly apply to AI; if AI could recognize when its actions yield negative consequences, it might learn to avoid repeating those errors.

Immanuel Kant suggested that regret plays a crucial role in moral development by helping us acknowledge our shortcomings and strive for improvement. Although AI's lack of moral comprehension limits the applicability of Kant's ideas in programming, they still provide valuable insights regarding the potential benefits of integrating "regret" into AI systems to foster better decision-making.

Recent investigations have revealed that regret can significantly impact our mental and physical health, leading to increased stress and related health issues like headaches and insomnia. This raises concerns about the ramifications of allowing AI to experience regret—do we want an AI that is burdened by stress? Given the tendency of AI models like ChatGPT to misconstrue facts or draw erroneous conclusions, the possibility of AI experiencing mental distress due to regret is troubling.
Furthermore, the emotions of guilt and shame associated with regret could lead to anxiety and depression, qualities we would not want in AI systems. Imagine if a self-driving vehicle were to become incapacitated by feelings of sadness while navigating the highway. Therefore, careful consideration of the legal and ethical ramifications is essential before contemplating the introduction of regret into AI.
Section 2.1: AI's Journey Towards Understanding Regret
Since regret is so deeply ingrained in human experience, AI researchers are now endeavoring to incorporate this emotion into AI systems. The objective is to create AI that learns from its mistakes, thereby enhancing decision-making capabilities and problem-solving skills.
Researchers are employing reinforcement learning techniques to facilitate this process. In this framework, AI systems are rewarded for making correct choices and penalized for incorrect ones, allowing them to learn and adapt over time.
The thought of AI potentially surpassing human intelligence in certain domains raises intriguing questions about the future of these systems.
The second video titled "82. Regret" explores various dimensions of regret and its implications, providing insights into how it shapes human experiences.
Moreover, AI researchers are also exploring natural language processing (NLP) to enable AI to interpret expressions of regret, such as "I regret that decision." This approach raises philosophical questions about the authenticity of AI's regret—are these systems truly experiencing regret, or merely mimicking human responses based on learned patterns?
As AI engineers work towards instilling empathy in AI, the goal is to enhance its ability to understand and respond to human emotions more accurately. This could foster improved communication and problem-solving, but there are also risks. If an empathetic AI could manipulate users' emotions, it could lead them to make harmful decisions.
Teaching AI to express regret is complex, and each method carries potential downsides. As a legal professional, I contemplate how we should regulate "empathetic" AI, as its behavior may diverge from our current understanding, potentially imitating human actions with grave consequences. Nonetheless, continued research is crucial, and I believe that teaching AI some form of "regret" could lead to improved outcomes compared to our present experiences.
