Exploring Mesophotic Reefs: Insights from ICRS 2022 in Bremen

Chapter 1: Overview of the International Coral Reef Symposium
In early July, I attended the International Coral Reef Symposium held in Bremen, Germany, where numerous scientists from around the globe gathered, with many participating virtually. This event holds great significance for coral reef researchers, who make every effort to present their findings and engage with peers.
The topics discussed were diverse, covering coral restoration, ocean acidification, fish behavior, and much more. Presentations were organized into themed sessions, while subjects that didn’t fit a specific category were showcased during a general poster session one evening.
One notable session focused on mesophotic reefs—those lesser-known ecosystems that remain largely unexplored. Unfortunately, this session took place in the smallest conference room, yet it was packed with attendees eager to learn.
This high turnout reflects the growing interest in mesophotic reef science, which, despite often being overshadowed by broader marine science topics, is slowly gaining recognition among researchers.
Section 1.1: Highlights from the Mesophotic Session
The speakers in this session hailed from various regions, including California, Israel, and the Indian Ocean, as well as the Virgin Islands. Each presentation offered unique insights, often concluding with the reminder that further research is essential.
We learned that while mesophotic coral cover is declining, the rate is not as severe as in shallower waters, and these deeper reefs can sometimes avoid bleaching. Additionally, corals relocated from deep environments to shallower settings showed a remarkable ability to survive. The session featured striking visuals of plastics entangled in deep coral, as well as stunning 3D reconstructions of small reef areas and vibrant newly identified fish species.
A consensus emerged from these discussions: mesophotic reefs are vital ecosystems with distinct coral and fish communities. They warrant dedicated research efforts and management strategies.
Section 1.2: The Significance of Mesophotic Reefs
The gathering featured leading marine scientists from around the world, highlighting that even among experts, there remains much to learn about mesophotic reefs. Reefs Unknown aims to further enhance our collective understanding of these unique underwater ecosystems.
Chapter 2: Key Takeaways from the Symposium
The first video titled "Messages from the 15th International Coral Reef Symposium ICRS2022" captures key messages and insights shared during the event, showcasing the importance of ongoing research in coral reef ecosystems.
The second video "Pim Bongaerts - Mesophotic coral ecosystems: insights from molecular ecology" delves into the molecular ecology of mesophotic coral ecosystems, offering valuable perspectives on their significance and conservation needs.
