Chapter 1: Understanding ChatGPT's Capabilities

Recently, I, like numerous researchers intrigued by artificial intelligence, decided to experiment with ChatGPT. My primary aim was to explore the potential implications of ChatGPT in academic settings. While other language models exist that can generate text and assist content creators, I questioned whether ChatGPT could effectively produce scholarly content.

To investigate, I first inquired if ChatGPT could compose my Ph.D. thesis. The response was enlightening:

"ChatGPT isn't capable of writing a full thesis, but it can certainly assist with research and various writing tasks." I found this encouraging, as it suggested that ChatGPT could support my writing efforts, particularly in paraphrasing. This functionality isn't entirely novel; other platforms already provide similar services. Nonetheless, I decided to probe further with a challenging example.

The results were promising! Such capabilities could prove invaluable for any writer, whether engaged in academic, technical, or blogging endeavors. However, this raised a crucial question: Is it possible to identify AI-generated text?

Detecting AI-generated content may prove to be quite challenging, especially if the user refines the text to enhance its readability and coherence. I then asked if ChatGPT could search specific databases like PubMed.

Unfortunately, ChatGPT lacks the ability to conduct such specialized searches; human intellect remains indispensable for this task. Nonetheless, I was impressed with what ChatGPT could do and playfully asked if we could become best friends. Here’s what it said…

Conclusion

ChatGPT undoubtedly provides valuable assistance to writers and can help create original content in various contexts, including academic writing. However, it's essential for the writer to review the output and ensure proper citations or paraphrasing. This ability is not unique, as similar language models have been performing this task for some time. But does using ChatGPT in academic work cross ethical boundaries?
