# Expertise: A Four-Letter Word in Today’s Society

In recent times, the importance of expert knowledge has come under fire, particularly evident in the ongoing discourse surrounding Covid-19. The recent clash between Neil Young and Spotify highlights this trend, where Young pressured the streaming giant to address Joe Rogan’s anti-vaccine rhetoric or remove his music entirely. My reflections on this matter were featured in an op-ed for OneZero, and it didn’t take long for me to realize the fervor with which Rogan's supporters defended him.

As I read through various comment sections related to the #DeleteSpotify movement, certain recurring themes emerged. Many of Rogan’s listeners perceive the scrutiny towards him as an infringement on his First Amendment rights, dismissing any notion of ‘vaccine misinformation’ entirely.
Since the pandemic’s onset, I have consistently turned to the insights of medical professionals. When Dr. Anthony Fauci assured us of the Covid-19 vaccine's safety, I was ready to get vaccinated. As 2021 progressed, I was taken aback by the number of individuals choosing not to receive a vaccine that could significantly lower their risk of severe illness. The more substantial evidence supporting the vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna emerged, the louder the conspiracy theories grew.
As I previously mentioned, conspiracy theorists often interpret a lack of evidence as a form of validation. This countercultural mindset has long existed in our society, but during the pandemic, it escalated dangerously, with individuals opting to risk their lives rather than adhere to established health guidelines. I have termed this phenomenon toxic contrarianism.

The ongoing Spotify issue has revealed an alarming attachment among Rogan's followers to unfounded theories, including the claim that ivermectin can treat Covid-19. Despite the FDA's clear warnings against this, many choose to believe a podcast host over the nation’s top medical experts. One LinkedIn comment on a pro-vaccine post stated, "There is no vaccine disinformation, only different options."
This mindset evokes the ‘cult of ignorance’ that Russian author Isaac Asimov once described. Recently, Tom Nichols articulated this issue succinctly in his book The Death of Expertise:
“The bigger problem is that we’re proud of not knowing things. Americans have reached a point where ignorance, especially of anything related to public policy, is an actual virtue. To reject the advice of experts is to assert autonomy, a way for Americans to insulate their increasingly fragile egos from ever being told they’re wrong about anything.”
The implications of these attitudes indicate a broader struggle against established knowledge. Many individuals outright refuse to accept guidance from those most qualified, instead opting for alternative viewpoints often lacking robust evidence. Phrases like “I’m not a sheep; I don’t blindly trust what I’m told” have become pervasive. When I attempt to engage in discussions with these individuals, they often express surprise at my willingness to trust science and data.
Section 1.2: The Role of Expertise in Learning
I consider myself a free thinker and do my own research when necessary, but I also place trust in those whose expertise in specific fields is well-founded. In educational settings, we rely on teachers to impart crucial knowledge. Learning should be a continuous journey, and consulting qualified experts remains one of the best ways to deepen understanding.
For instance, if Gordon Ramsay advised me on undercooked chicken, I would heed his counsel. Similarly, I would consider feedback from Warren Buffet regarding my financial strategies or from Bob Woodward on my journalistic endeavors. If Michael Jordan pointed out flaws in my free throw technique, I would adjust accordingly. The same applies to any guidance from Bill Gates on my programming errors or from Steven Spielberg regarding my filmmaking.
I listened to Dr. Fauci when he recommended mask-wearing and vaccination. His guidance evolved as new data became available during the pandemic. Until credible, peer-reviewed evidence suggests otherwise, I will continue to trust his expertise.
