Empowering Safety for Women on Business Trips

Chapter 1: The Importance of Safety in Business Travel
Creating a secure work environment is crucial for everyone. However, women often face uncomfortable or unsafe situations under the guise of business necessity. Regardless of gender, leaders have the responsibility to prioritize the safety of all team members, particularly women.
As a lifelong advocate for gender equality, I firmly believe that women are just as capable and deserving of opportunities as men. Yet, there have been instances where both I and other women have been placed in precarious situations, particularly during work-related travel.
A memorable experience was a trip to Australia for a conference. Due to the timing of my flight, I arrived at my hotel around 7 PM, and it was already dark outside. After taking a taxi from the airport, I checked into what I initially thought was a hotel, only to discover it was more of a collection of private rooms with no staff available after hours.
While my room was acceptable, the noise from the adjoining room indicated a serious argument taking place. Hungry from not eating during the flight, I found myself without room service or any snacks to hold me over until morning. With limited options, I had to venture out into an unfamiliar and poorly lit area in search of food—something that felt risky at the time.
The neighborhood was not welcoming, surrounded by deserted office buildings and warehouses. As I stepped into the dark, I grappled with feelings of anger and uncertainty. I questioned whether my concerns were valid and if other women or even men would react similarly. Senior leaders often enjoy the luxury of quality accommodations with amenities that ensure their safety and comfort.
I was aware of a pub nearby but was unaware it would be my sole option for dining. Although I usually feel at ease eating alone, I typically have some familiarity with the area I’m in.
As a leader, it is essential to guarantee the safety and well-being of your team members—both male and female—when they travel for work.
